Point-of-Care Ultrasound

QPEM – POCUS is a two-day interactive hands-on practical workshop which will guide the clinician to gain the required knowledge and competence in the pediatric point of care ultrasound. This is a Department of Healthcare professions (DHP) approved CME activity with Category 1 & 3 points.

2. Who should take the course and why

This course is for physicians in Emergency Medicine, Anesthesia and Critical care.

The use of point of care ultrasound is now the standard of care and has been recognized as a major element in various board training programs in Canada and the ACGME training programs in the US. Clinicians at pediatric institutions are expected to be able to provide this point of care bedside standard.

3. What is involved and what makes it special?

It is an interactive course which provides practical hands-on experience in performing scans on high fidelity manikins and volunteers. The course instructors are highly experienced clinicians from Pediatric Emergency Medicine, Pediatric anesthesia, Interventional Radiology, Pediatric Intensive care and Neonatal Intensive care. A comprehensive course manual will be emailed to participants prior to course.

Course Chair

Dr Muthukumar Sakthivel (Kumar) is an Attending Physician in Pediatric Emergency at Sidra Medicine. His qualifications include MBBS, MD, PG Dip in Neurodisability, FRCPCH. He completed post graduate training at Institute of Child Health, Madras Medical College, India and higher specialist training from North Western Deanery, UK. He was working as a consultant at Paediatric Assessment Unit, Emergency Department at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust from 2011-2017. He is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at Weill Cornell Medicine- Qatar. He is the chair person for POCUS scientific committee and PALS instructor.

Course Facilitator

Dr. Sheik Abdul Razak is an Attending Physician currently working in the ED at Sidra Medicine where he also holds the title of Quality Lead for the Department. He works in conjunction with the Sidra Medicine Quality and Safety Committee, working to maintain a very high standard of both quality and patient safety in the busy ED. He previously worked as Consultant Pediatrician in York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust since February from 2015 to 2018. After completion of Post graduate Diploma in Child Health in Madras Medical College, he completed his Pediatric training in the UK. He was an undergraduate lead and Honorary Lecturer of Hull & York Medical School. Dr. Abdul Razak was Royal College Tutor before started his work in Sidra. He regularly instructs in Advanced Pediatric Life Support course (UK).

Course Facilitator

Dr. Sohail Ghani is an Attending Physician at Sidra pediatric emergency medicine since 2017. He graduated from Pakistan and completed his Pediatric fellowship at renowned Nishtar Medical Institute, Multan. Dr. Ghani pursued further training in Pediatrics in the South West of England achieving certificate of completion of training (CCT) and special interest module in Pediatric Epilepsy by the Royal College of Pediatrics and Child Health, London (RCPCH) Dr. Ghani served as national trainee representative for the RCPCH examinations for 2 years and is a member of central board of examiners for the RCPCH. Dr Ghani has extensive experience in clinical as well as teaching and training in pediatrics. He is currently an Assistant Professor in Pediatric and Emergency Medicine at Weill-Cornell Medicine Qatar where he is actively involved in teaching and assessment of medical students.

Course Facilitator

Born in Baghdad 1977 and obtained medical degree from Baghdad College of Medicine in 2001. Residency was in Bagdad, North London, Kent, Nottingham, and Bristol. Completed membership and fellowship training in Emergency Medicine with subspecialty in Pediatric emergency medicine in London 2018. Obtained diploma from Edinburgh university for PEM and Diploma from Cardiff open university in medical toxicology 2021. Finishing now master degree in medical toxicology. In addition to Emergency medicine practice, ED clinical lead of Disaster Medicine in Sidra. Enjoy teaching and do that through PALS and ALS instruction, teaching procedural sedation, regional blocks and POCUS.

Course Facilitator

Dr Ali joined the Sidra Neonatology Center of Excellence, Doha, Qatar in 2018 from the Royal Hobart Hospital in Australia.
He is the clinical program lead for quality in the NICU and has completed a post-graduation certification in quality and safety from the Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA apart from being accredited by the National Association of Healthcare Quality (NAHQ) as a Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ). He has worked on reducing unplanned extubations, improving oxygen saturation targeting in NICU, implementing central line infection prevention bundles, optimizing preterm nutrition and auditing neonatal transports during present and past appointments.
The main focus of Dr Ali’s clinical research is in the field of automated oxygen control for preterm infants on respiratory support in addition to investigating the utility of minimally invasive surfactant therapy (MIST).
He is also involved in simulation training for enhancing the management of complex resuscitation scenarios, organizing difficult airway workshops and providing functional echocardiography services as a member of the neonatal hemodynamic team.

Course Facilitator

Dr Sundaram joined Sidra Medicine in January of 2018 as a Physician in the Pediatric Intensive Care. He is Medical for Quality at Sidra Medicine and an Assistant Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar.

Dr Sundaram worked as an Assistant Professor in Pediatrics after qualifying from the Saurashtra University, India in 2001. He moved to UK in 2004 and has been trained in pediatric intensive care medicine with an interest in respiratory medicine. He completed his PICU training from Birmingham Children’s Hospital and has worked as a Consultant in Pediatric Intensive Care Medicine at the University Hospital of North Midlands, UK.

He has been frequently invited to talk on his areas of interest at various international conference and to run the European Society of Pediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care (ESPNIC) endorsed course on Acute Non Invasive Ventilation courses internationally.

Course Facilitator

Dr Sajith had his training in United Kingdom and has been working as consultant anaesthetist since 2011. His Qualifications include MD Anaesthesiology ( All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, FRCA ( Royal College of Anaesthetists, London. He has special interest in Pediatric vascular access and has run the Advanced Pediatric Vascular Access course since 2018 in Sidra Medicine. He is co-inventor of 'IV-Assist' an ultrasound guided vascular access assistance tool currently being developed in Collaboration with Texas A&M University, Qatar. He is also regular invited Faculty for Kings College Hospital Difficult Airway Management Workshop.
