QPEM- Procedural sedation course
This training program focuses on pediatric sedation for procedures. It includes didactic teaching sessions, case-based discussions, simulations and practical workshops designed to improve clinical skills and critical thinking relating to procedural sedation.
The target audience are physicians with non-anesthesiology/non-critical care training background who require privileging for delivering procedural sedation of children in the Emergency Department. The program is offered to Fellows/residents rotating in Emergency Medicine as well as well as external health care practitioners who perform sedation in children. The course has a track for nurses as well that covers the nursing aspects of pediatric procedural sedation.
The learning objectives of the training program are as follows:
- Apply pediatric sedation guidelines, including pre-sedation evaluation, monitoring and discharge criteria.
- Differentiate between mild, moderate sedation, deep sedation, dissociation and general anesthesia.
- Evaluate and apply agents used for moderate sedation, dissociative sedation and deep sedation including indications, contraindications, dosage, administration, side effects and implications for care.
- Recognize patients at risk for developing upper airway obstruction and describe the appropriate interventions for complications that may occur.
- Identify the essential components to be considered for returning patients to a state in which safe discharge is possible.
The topics that will be covered in this training program includes, pediatric procedural sedation guidelines, consent related issues, evaluation of patients prior to sedation, pediatric airway management, medications in pediatric procedural sedation, pediatric procedural sedation in action as well as case-based discussions.
The practical sessions include pediatric airway management as well as simulated scenarios.
The feedback of candidates who attended the previous pediatric sedation courses was hugely positive. One candidate commented (I have learned proper implementation of procedural sedation in pediatric patients which will help us deliver safe, effective and quality care/management).
The course speakers are experienced attending physicians in pediatric emergency medicine and pediatrics with long experience in pediatric procedural sedation.
MEET THE FACULTY
Course Chair
Dr Mudawi has extensive experience in clinical and emergency pediatrics. He has always been active in teaching and assessing medical students both in the UK and Qatar. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Emergency at Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar.
Dr Mudawi is the lead of the Pediatric Procedural Sedation Program (PPSP) at Sidra Emergency Department. He is active in the research group at Sidra and has a number of publications in peer reviewed journals. His interests include acute pediatrics, neonatal medicine, pediatric sedation as well as pediatric cardiology.
Course Facilitator
Dr. Syed Haris Huda has worked at Sidra Medicine since January 2019 as an Attending Physician. His particular interest is in dealing with and managing Trauma and Acute medical /surgical emergencies in the Adult and pediatric population. He is presently the Education Lead for the emergency medicine department. Over the years, he has demonstrated success in transformative initiatives that enhance patient care and operational efficiency as the Lead for Minor injuries in Emergency medicine at Sidra Medicine and Associate program director for the PEM fellowship program. He is the chairperson for the Pediatric Emergency Resuscitation Program (PERP) and Instructor in ACLS, PALS, APLS & ATLS life support courses. He is a faculty member at Weil Cornell Medicine in Qatar. During his career, he has led and managed Mass casualties and Bomb blast victims as well. He is particularly interested in Medical education & teaches junior colleagues, peers and Nursing colleagues. To excel in providing for his role as an Educator, he completed his fellowship in Adult & Medical education from the American College of Emergency Physician.
Course Facilitator
Dr Tajeldin is a consultant in Emergency Medicine. He obtained his MBBS from University of Gezira, Sudan. He completed his Fellowship in Emergency Medicine (FRCEM) at the Royal College of Emergency Medicine and was awarded a certificate of completion of training (CCT) in the UK. He worked in different hospitals in England and Wales.
Dr Tajeldin is an instructor for the advanced resuscitation courses including ALS, APLS and ATLS. Before joining Sidra in November 2018, he worked as a consultant in Emergency Medicine in Morriston Hospital, Swansea.
Dr Tajeldin’s special interest is in quality improvement in health care, health promotion and patient education. He led successful quality improvement projects in the UK and Sidra ED. He is currently the patient education lead in the Sidra emergency department. Using technology and principles of quality improvement, he is leading the transformation of education material delivery to emergency department patients and families.
Outside work he enjoys photography and film editing.
Course Facilitator
Before moving to Qatar, Dr. Syed was the Lead Consultant of the Pediatric Emergency Department in his previous role. He also served as the Lead Consultant for Point of Care Ultrasound in the Emergency Department and is a faculty member on the Cambridge Level 1 Ultrasound course accredited by the Royal College of Emergency Medicine, UK. Additionally, he was a panel member on the Annual Review of Clinical Progression (ARCP) for trainees in Emergency Medicine in the UK and an interviewer for the national recruitment of trainees in Emergency Medicine. Dr. Syed is also an Examiner for the Royal College of Emergency Medicine, London (UK). He is currently the Vice-Chair of the Pediatric Sedation Committee at Sidra Medicine.

The 9th Qatar - Pediatric Emergency Medicine (QPEM) International Virtual Conference 2025 is open to all healthcare professionals with an interest in or practice involving providing emergency and urgent care to children.
