To provide additional perspectives and expertise, our faculty also includes sought-after international speakers who bring unique and diverse insights on key topics in Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM). This authoritative conference will be an invaluable resource for all healthcare professionals involved, directly or indirectly, in the care of children in acute and urgent care settings worldwide. CONFERENCE CHAIRMAN
Prof. Khalid Al Ansari MD, FRCP-C, FAAP (PEM) is the inaugural Chairman of the Sidra Medicine Emergency Department that sees more than 110,000 children under the age of 18 years annually, including those seen as a level 1 Trauma Center: More than 1000 Tier 1 and 2 patients annually. Prof. Al Ansari is the founder of National Poison Center and the founder of the Child Advocacy Program in Qatar. He is also the Chairman of the Sidra wide Hospital Resuscitation Program. Prof. Al Ansari's extensive expertise in Emergency Medicine, Acute Medical Care has helped him transform the delivery of Pediatric Emergency services to patients in Qatar. He is a Professor of Clinical Pediatrics and Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine at Weil Cornell Medical College-Qatar and Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at Qatar University. His research interest are in emergency respiratory diseases, gastroenteritis, pediatric sedation and child abuse in Qatar. He is the Chairman of IRB Qatar Biomedical Bank, Chairman of MOPH National Child Protection Committee and member of National Disaster Committee.

Dr. Syed Haris Huda has been an Attending Physician in Emergency Medicine at Sidra Medicine since January 2019. His clinical practice spans the full spectrum of adult and pediatric emergency care, with particular expertise in trauma and acute medical and surgical emergencies. He currently serves as the Education Lead for the Department of Emergency Medicine, where he is closely involved in curriculum development, faculty development, and trainee education.
Over the years, Dr. Huda has led several transformative initiatives aimed at improving patient care delivery and operational efficiency. These include his roles as Lead for Minor Injuries in Emergency Medicine at Sidra Medicine and Former Associate Program Director for the Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) Fellowship Program. He is the Chair of the Pediatric Emergency Resuscitation Program (PERP) and is an instructor in ACLS, PALS, APLS, and ATLS life support courses.
Dr. Huda holds a faculty appointment at Weill Cornell Medicine–Qatar and has extensive real-world experience in leading and managing mass casualty incidents, including bomb blast–related emergencies. He has a strong interest in medical education and is deeply committed to teaching junior doctors, peers, and nursing colleagues. To further strengthen his role as an educator, he completed a Fellowship in Adult and Medical Education through the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP).
He currently serves as an examiner for both the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM) and the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH). In parallel, he is pursuing a Master’s degree in Healthcare Leadership and Management at UCLA, reflecting his ongoing commitment to excellence in education, leadership, and system-level improvement in emergency care.

Dr. Sohail Ghani, an Attending Physician graduated from Pakistan and completed his Pediatric fellowship at Nishtar Medical Institute, Pakistan. Dr. Ghani pursued further training in Pediatrics in the South West of England, which included completion of special interest module in Pediatric Epilepsy. Dr. Ghani served as national trainee representative for the RCPCH examination for 2 years and is a member of central board of examiners for the RCPCH. Dr. Ghani worked in the Middle East including Dubai and Saudi Arabia, prior to moving to the UK.

Dr. Omair Mohammed Syed is an Attending Physician in Pediatric Emergency Medicine. He joined Sidra Medicine in September 2022. Dr. Syed completed his post-graduation in Emergency Medicine in India. He then moved to the UK, where he pursued higher specialist training in Emergency Medicine with a subspecialty in Pediatric Emergency Medicine at Cambridge University Hospitals, UK—a Major Trauma Centre for both adults and pediatrics in the East of England. He was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine, UK, along with a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT). Before moving to Qatar, Dr. Syed was the Lead Consultant of the Pediatric Emergency Department in his previous role. He also served as the Lead Consultant for Point of Care Ultrasound in the Emergency Department and is a faculty member on the Cambridge Level 1 Ultrasound course accredited by the Royal College of Emergency Medicine, UK. Additionally, he was a panel member on the Annual Review of Clinical Progression (ARCP) for trainees in Emergency Medicine in the UK and an interviewer for the national recruitment of trainees in Emergency Medicine. Dr. Syed is also an Examiner for the Royal College of Emergency Medicine, London (UK). He serves as an instructor for Advanced Life Support (ALS), Advanced Pediatric Life Support (APLS), and Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) courses across the UK, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar. He is currently the Clinical Lead for the Pediatric procedural sedation in the Emergency department and the Vice-chair of the Sidra Pediatric Sedation Committee”.

Dr. Barbara Blackie MD, FRCPC, MEd has recently arrived back to Nova Scotia after 10 years working in Qatar, where she was the Education Lead and a Senior Attending Physician in Pediatric Emergency Medicine, responsible for the training, systems testing and leading interprofessional teams for a safe opening of a new peds ED in a greenfield tertiary, level one trauma center. She is now working in the ED at the IWK Health Center in Halifax, has an Associate Professor appointment with the Department of Emergency Medicine at Dalhousie University and holds the role of TREKK Atlantic Nodal Lead where she is working along with Maritime Child Health to improve and standardize Pediatric Emergency Care in the region.
She has developed a one day simulated practice based course for an interprofessional team and takes this course on the road with her small but mighty team several times a year to deliver in hospitals and EDs without dedicated PEM physicians or pediatricians. Barbara also is currently leading the revisions and updating of the Standards of Care for Children in the Emergency Department document for the Pediatric Special Interest Group (PEMSIG) of the International Federation of Emergency Medicine (IFEM), allowing her to work with colleagues across the globe.

Dr. Fayyaz joined SickKids in 2016 as a PEM Fellow and is currently a Staff Physician and Assistant Professor, University of Toronto. Dr. Fayyaz graduated from Pakistan and worked as a Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) faculty at Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) for 5 years. She was among the few leaders in Pakistan with the EM specialty recognized by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan in 2011. Later, she worked at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital (SQUH) for 3 years and led the implementaon of the Canadian Triage and Acuity Scale (CTAS), followed by a quality improvement iniave ulizing the LEAN Sigma methodology. In 2016 she started her PEM fellowship at SickKids, followed by a one-year Simulaon fellowship. In 2018, she completed her master’s degree in health professional educaon from Aga Khan University Hospital, followed by Ph.D. in simulaon from the MGH IHP, an affiliate of Harvard, USA. She is appointed recently as Simkids Medical director. Dr. Fayyaz is the PEM internaonal fellowship program director and resuscitaon lead. Dr. Fayyaz is also the Internaonal Paediatric Simulaon Society (IPSS) - INSPIRE PED Simulaon fellowship Chair and Board of INSPIRE and IPSS directors. Being passionate about ulizing distance simulaon for community outreach and capacity building, In the last 3 years, she worked with Indus Hospital and the health network; she has implemented a simulaon-based PEM curriculum for EM residents and a one-year PEM cerficaon program with 27 physicians graduang in July 2023. A Simulaon instructor course for faculty development was implemented, and more than 50 educators have been trained for simulaon-based educaon in Pakistan. Her internaonal work connued in India, Egypt, and Ireland. In addion, at SickKids, Dr. Fayyaz is the resuscitaon lead for the competency-based medical educaon program (CBME) for Faculty, Faculty lead for the Hot wash debriefing program, Chair resuscitaon oversight commitee and ED lead for CPR coach role implementaon. Dr. Camilo E. Gutierrez is an internationally recognized Pediatric Emergency Physician, with experience as a clinician, educator, and expert in international pediatric emergency care. Director of Global Health Programs for the Division of Emergency Medicine at Children’s National Hospital, and Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine at George Washington University School of Medicine, in Washington DC. Dr. Gutierrez is a key opinion leader at the advisory level in the development of acute care systems at the local, country and regional level globally, with emphasis in development of pediatric acute and emergency care systems. He is Immediate Past-Chair for the ACEP International EM Section, and active in the International and Ambassador Committees. Internationally he is Immediate Past-Chair of the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Special Interest Group of the International Federation of Emergency Medicine, and member of the Specialty Implementation, Education, and Curriculum Committees. He is Founding and Board Member of the first Latin American Pediatric EM Society (SLEPE). Dr. Gutierrez is a recognized speaker both locally and in over a dozen countries where he has presented over 100 lectures and has authored over 60 publications. His interests expand on international and global health care arenas, development of pediatric acute care systems, pediatric trauma and critical care in the ED, ultrasound, shock, difficult airway management and procedural sedation. He is past Chair and Medical Director of the EMS-C Advisory Committee for Massachusetts, past Co- Chair of the MACEP Pediatric EM Section, and has served as VP of the Global Emergency Medicine Academy of SAEM, through AAEM International Committee has been involved in collaborating with leading Pediatric EM topics and speakers for their international conferences. Dr. Gutierrez has established an international reputation as a leader, supporter, and promoter of the importance of pediatric emergency care in regions worldwide. He is sought after for his opinion, his capacity to network, craft partnerships and engage stakeholders as he advocates for the care of children globally.

Dr. Al Farsi (Oman) joined the Royal Hospital in 1999 as a pediatric resident and then followed up with a Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship in the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Canada from 2003 until 2006. He then successfully completed further training in Pediatric Intensive Care at the Children's Hospital of Western Ontario, London Ontario Canada from 2006-2007. Since his return to Oman in 2007, he has worked as Pediatric Emergentologist, a Pediatric Intensivist and was the head of Pediatric Emergency unit until 2012. In 2010 Dr. Al Farsi was appointed as Deputy Director of the Child Health Department, Royal Hospital and was promoted to Director of the Child Health Department in September 2015. He is actively involved in multiple committees include as chairperson of the CPR committee at the Royal Hospital and is a member of other committees at the Royal, and with the Ministry of Health and Oman Medical Specialty Board (OMSB).

Studies in children and adults have demonstrated improved outcomes in hemorrhagic shock with empiric transfusion of a high ratio of plasma to packed red blood cells or the use of low titer O negative whole blood while minimizing the use of crystalloid. With increasing availability of viscoelastic testing such as thromboelastography (TEG®, Haemonetics) and rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM®, Haemoview Diagnostics), there are opportunities to implement individualized goal directed transfusion therapy. Dr. Finkelstein’s talk will provide an overview of the deadly diamond of death of hemorrhage, provide an overview of current guidelines and review empiric versus goal directed hemostatic resuscitation in children with hemorrhagic shock.
Dr. Robert Finkelstein is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics at Weill Cornell Medicine and an Assistant Attending Physician in the Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital both in New York City. Dr. Finkelstein received his medical degree from the McGill University Faculty of Medicine. He completed his residency at Yale-New Haven Hospital/Yale University School of Medicine, and a fellowship in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School, as well as a fellowship in Pediatric Emergency Medicine
at Boston Medical Center/Boston University School of Medicine.
He is board certified in General Pediatrics, Pediatric Critical Care, and Pediatric Emergency Medicine. His interests include trauma, resuscitation, medical simulation, wound care in the emergency department, and the use of point of care ultrasound for both procedures and diagnostics. Dr. Finkelstein serves as the Associate Pediatric Trauma Medical Director at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medicine, is the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Liaison to the Trauma Performance Improvement and Patient Safety Committee and is a member of the Pediatric Blood Management Committee of NewYork Presbyterian Hospital. He was the site principal investigator for the NIH funded multi-center prospective observational study, “MATIC: Massive Transfusion Epidemiology and Outcomes in Children Study.” He is part of the master faculty of the Trauma In Kids Course of the Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians and has been involved in the revision of the TRIK curriculum and was director of the first TRIK course offered in New York City. He has been faculty for the course at sites in Canada, The United States, Nigeria, and Burundi. He is a member of the guidelines committee of the Pediatric Trauma Society, is part of the faculty for the annual Weill Cornell Medicine Protected Airway Course and the Transition to Residency Course, and has served as faculty for the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Base Camp, and the New York City Pediatric Residency Simulation Olympics.

Dr.Adriana Yock-Corrales M.D. MSc. is a Pediatric Emergency Physician from Costa Rica and Clinical Chief of the Emergency Department at the Hospital Nacional de Niños “Dr. Carlos Saenz Herrera” in Costa Rica. She did her Pediatric Residency at the National Children's Hospital in San Jose and in 2008 went to Melbourne, Australia where she did her Pediatric Emergency Fellowship at the Royal Children’s Hospital. On 2012 she did a Master in Epidemiology Applied to Health Science at the National University in Costa Rica and in 2016 a Diplomat in Toxicology at the Universidad Católica of Chile. She currently is part of the teaching committee of the Emergency/Pediatric Residency Programs. She is Co-Chair of RIDEPLA (Red de Investigacion Pediatrica en Latino America) and involved in research studies with publications in peer-reviewed journals. Since 2014, she is part of the Pediatric Emergency Medicine SIG of IFEM. She is the International Affair Lead of the Asociación Costarricense de Médicos Emergenciólogos(ASOCOME) and part of the Executive Committee of the Pediatric Emergency Latinamerica Society (SLEPE).

As an Associate Professor at King Saud Bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences, Dr. Hazwani integrates effective education strategies into clinical practice, mentoring healthcare professionals to excel in high-pressure environments. He is also a certified trainer for the 'Training-of-Trainers (ToT) on the go' program, which further extends his dedication to faculty development by equipping clinician teachers with advanced teaching and assessment methodologies.
Dr. Hazwani currently serves as the Head of Simulation Programs at Riyadh Clinical Simulation Center (RCSC), and the Pediatric Simulation Training & Education Program (PediSTEP) Chair at King Abdullah Specialized Children's Hospital. He is also the course director for the Pediatric Residency Simulation Course (PedSim Training) and the PICU Boot Camp Course at King Saud Bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences.

Dr. Katrina Hurley is an Emergency Physician and former Chief of the IWK Emergency Department. She teaches ATLS and was a trauma team leaders for 15 years. Her concern for burnout among health professionals and its impact on creativity and transformation led Katrina to become a Certified Professional Co-Active Coach. She is currently the Assistant Dean, Faculty Wellness at Dalhousie University’s Faculty of Medicine.

Dr Taj Hassan has been a consultant in Emergency Medicine at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust since 1999 and is Director of the CAILTEC platform. He is Past President of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine. Internationally, he has been involved in running leadership training programmes for the International Federation of EM (IFEM) as well as for the European Society for EM and designed and co-led the EM Leaders programme for the Royal College of Emergency Medicine in 2018 that is now embedded into training in the UK. His other main interests are technology enhanced education and systems development to help build safer emergency care. He has been Chair for Europe on the Board of the International Federation for EM (2016 to 2022) as well as Chair of the International Faculty of the Pakistan Society of EM since 2019 and is also the Chair of the newly formed South Asian Collaborative for Emergency care (SACEM). He leads the collaborative HALO Programme at www.cailtec.org which aims to help ‘fast track’ emergency care development in South Asia – home to 1 in 5 people on the planet!

Dr. Yara AlGoraini is a Pediatric Emergency Physician based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with a special interest in pediatric resuscitation, digital health, and clinical research. She is the founder of PEM Updates, a virtual platform connecting pediatric emergency physicians and trainees globally through bi-monthly educational sessions. Dr. AlGoraini serves as the Lead of the Pediatric Code Sepsis progect in the Emergency Department of Cluster 2 and is a member of the Urgent and Critical Care Quality Committee. She is actively engaged in national and international research, is the author of the forthcoming book Pediatric Emergency Medicine: Tricks, Tips, and Pearls, and is passionate about integrating health informatics and artificial intelligence into emergency care to enhance decision-making and patient outcomes.

Dr. Kenneth McKinley is a pediatric emergency medicine clinician scientist with a research focus in predictive analytics. Since his clinical fellowship at Columbia University, he has used discrete event simulation models to understand the function of the Emergency Department as a complex system and predict the impact of system changes on patient throughput. As faculty at Children’s National Hospital, he has pursued research using predictive analytics and novel therapeutics to improve the emergency management of children with sickle cell disease (SCD). Children with SCD represent a vulnerable population with a severe chronic illness and frequent acute exacerbations requiring emergency care. Children with SCD are especially vulnerable to suboptimal emergency care during surges in patient volumes and emergency department crowding. This phenomenon led to Dr. McKinley’s current core research program, predicting emergency department surges to identify periods of crowding before any children receive suboptimal care.

Dr. Muhammad Amjad Khan is a distinguished Senior Consultant Paediatric Dermatologist with extensive experience and qualifications in Paediatric care, Paediatric Dermatology and Rheumatology as well as healthcare management. He holds a CCT in Paediatrics from the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, UK, and is a Fellow of both the Royal College of Physicians of Glasgow and Edinburgh. As a specialist, Dr. Khan's expertise lies in Paediatric Dermatology, where he holds a certified SPIN (Special Interest) qualification. His professional experience includes significant roles across the NHS and international settings, including his current position as a Senior Consultant Paediatric Dermatologist at East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust. He has also held key positions at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and served as a Clinical Lead for Dermatology at Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust. Beyond his clinical practice, Dr. Khan is a dedicated medical educator and a recognized leader in healthcare management, with an MBA in Healthcare Management and a recent certification in Generative AI for Healthcare. His published research, including work on novel treatments for vascular anomalies in children, reflects his commitment to advancing medical knowledge and patient care. His memberships in prominent organizations such as the British Association of Paediatric Dermatology and the Society of Pediatric Dermatology (USA) underscore his active involvement in the global paediatric community.

Mrs. Jeffries is an emergency nurse with more than 40 years of experience and is board certified in emergency nursing, (CEN), pediatric emergency nursing (CPEN, and trauma nursing (TCRN). She is an expert in nursing education and is board certified in nursing professional development (NPD-BC) and is a fellow in the Academy of Emergency Nursing (FAEN). She has been involved in nursing and ancillary education and is an international speaker and educator. Mrs. Jeffries co-authored the book Rapid Access Guide for Pediatric Emergencies: Providing Expert Nursing Care which was awarded the 2021 American Journal of Nursing (AJN) Book of the Year (3rd place) and has authored peer review articles. She is also a peer reviewer for professional nursing journals.

She currently serves as the Respiratory Therapy Team Leader at Al Jalila Children’s Hospital, where she leads a team dedicated to delivering high quality pediatric critical care. Laura holds a Bachelor of Health Science from Thompson Rivers University and a Master of Arts in Global Leadership from Royal Roads University. She is an instructor for basic to advanced life support courses including BLS, ACLS, PALS and NRP and enjoys practicing education across multidisciplinary teams on a variety of topics. Dr. Alhatali is the head of the poison control section, in the department of environmental and occupational Health, at the Ministry of Health in Sultanate of Oman. She is a consultant in the emergency medicine department at the Royal Hospital and hold the program director position of the emergency medicine specialty in the Oman Medical Specialty Board (OMSB). She also serves as the Middle East and North Africa Association of Medical Toxicology (MENATOX) President and International Advisory Board chair for National Institute for Health and Care Research RIGHT4 (Preventing Death from Acute Poisoning in Low and Middle Income Countries). She graduated from Oman Medical Specialty Board in 2012 as well as certified by the Arab Emergency Medicine Board. She finished her Post Doctoral Fellowship in medical toxicology at Emory University and the Georgia Poison Center in Atlanta, USA in 2014. She developed the poison consultation services in the country and has lectured in countries around the world and has numerous awards to her credit. Dr Alhatali has a true passion for Toxicology and advancing the field in the MENA region.

Khalid Al Yafei (MD) is a senior pediatric emergency physician and former chief of medical informatics. He has also been an associate professor at Weill Cornell Medical College-Qatar and the Medical College of Qatar University. As Dr. Alyafei is actively involved in many research studies, he’s also a strong advocate in public education with a particular interest in injury prevention, home safety, and child abuse prevention. In 2008, Dr. Al Yafei embarked on his illustrious journey in health informatics and education. His commitment to his profession is evident in his continued practice as a senior attending pediatric emergency physician and medical director of PALS at Sidra Medicine. His leadership in these roles ensures that the highest standards of care and safety are maintained.

Dr. Brisseau is a cutting edge pediatric general and thoracic surgeon as well as an acclaimed surgical educator. He is a board certified general surgeon as well as a pediatric surgeon. These dual boards are held in two countries , USA and Canada. Having practiced in both countries he brings this clinical expertise to Doha at the Sidra Medical and Research Center. Pediatric surgeons care for the most vulnerable members in our society. They care for children born with congenital anomalies as well as those with cancer. Anatomically pediatric surgeons care for the complete child. These include problems of the head and neck, thorax, abdomen, pelvis as well as soft tissues. Along with a wealth of broad clinical experience, Dr. Brisseau is also an advanced minimally invasive surgeon and an expert in pediatric trauma. Besides his clinical expertise Dr. Brisseau is an awarded medical educator having developed programs in a variety of areas including simulation and distance education. His academic area of research is in medical education.

Dr. Nadeem Jilani is a Senior Attending Physician in Sidra Emergency department and also Medical Director for Sidra Child Advocacy Program (S-CAP). He qualified and received his initial Pediatric training in India and then worked in reputed hospital in Saudi Arabia and UK. His qualifications are MBBS, MD (Pediatrics), MRCPCH, CCT (Pediatrics) and FRCPCH. He has worked as Pediatric Consultant employed by Pennine Acute Hospitals, NHS Trust before moving to Qatar. Safeguarding Children has been his area of special interest and he has served as Named Doctor for Safeguarding Children for North Manchester General Hospital. Dr. Jilani also has a passion for Medical education, teaching & training. He has been a Tutor for Royal College of Pediatrics and Child Health for his previous organization and is currently also an examiner for MRCPCH Clinical examination. She helped establish child life within the Sidra Medicine Emergency Department. Today, she covers the Hematology-Oncology Outpatient, Outpatient Infusion Clinic, Day Surgery Unit and Interventional Radiology. Prior to coming to Qatar, Nicole worked in Bronx, NY at the Children’s Hospital of Montefiore in the emergency department. With a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education, Nicole worked for several years as a preschool teacher and service coordinator for Early Intervention Services. Dr. Salwa Syed Sadaqat Ali is a senior pediatrician with over 20 years of clinical experience. She graduated from RMU University, Pakistan, and completed her internship and pediatric residency at Hamad Medical Corporation, Qatar, followed by a fellowship in Pediatric Hematology and Oncology. She currently works as a Hospitalist in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Sidra Medicine. Her clinical interests include benign hematological disorders. She is an active member of the Transfusion Medicine Committee and Co-Lead for the Hemoglobinopathy Service at Sidra Medicine.
